ADA LEA BOB DYLAN’S 115TH HAIRCUT
While it's often said that comparison is the thief of joy, Ada Lea reclaims it on 'bob dylan's 115th haircut' - the last track to come from her upcoming album when i paint my masterpiece. The new song opens a self-effacing creative window for Ada Lea - the moniker of Montreal-based musician Alexandra Levy. It lends itself to Dylan's mythos, but gently dismantles the pedestal that the famed singer-songwriter sits on with the brisk musing of 'Bob Dylan couldn't have written this song/Not even if he wanted to/Not even just for fun.' With lyricism that arrives like a passing train of thought alongside a close-knit arrangement of a granular, fingerpicked guitar line, sparse percussion and sporadic key notes, it avoids being overly sentimental, leaning into a playful liberation - even with a wistful harmonica melody that appears later in the song, a nod to its namesake. Speaking on the inspiration from the track, Lea explains: “Sometimes I get into these moods where I feel like there will always be a gap between what I want to say, and what I actually end up writing. I start comparing myself. The mood that evening was comparing myself to Bob Dylan. And why not? In order to pick myself up off the floor after saying things like ‘I could never write a song like Bob Dylan,’ which of course, is true, I had to reverse the thought ‘could he write one like me?’ Whether or not that was a good thing, it was something.” It's an affirming practice in Lea appreciating her own craft, its conviction simple: no one can write a song like Ada Lea, not even one of the greats. when i paint my masterpiece is due on 8 August via Saddle Creek. -Kayla Sandiford
